By the Light, of the Silvery Moon…it’s time to get planted

         Moonlight gardening2

Hello friends. It's so good to be home. I was away in Savannah last week, more about that later. All the way home, all seven hours of the way home, I was thinking about planting the kitchen garden this weekend.

Moonlight vegetable gardening I always think of myself as a challenged gardener. I do grow a great garden every year but the biggest obstacle is being an organic gardener in Tennessee. I've had very good success with cross planting to keep the bug and critter population down. The second thing I've done for the last 4 years is to plant by the moon. Rudolf Steiner wrote rather extensively on this topic. When I go back to my gardening journals I find that this method of planting actually has given me a larger and healthier harvest. Even during the drought two years ago I had a good harvest, even after they made us stop watering.

So without further adieu I now happily announce this years Moon planting schedule which starts tomorrow.

Sunday & Monday: April 26 & 27 are the most perfect days to plant root crops i.e. carrots, radishes, anything that grows underground. This would also include beets, leeks, onions, parsnips, potatoes, turnips etc.

Wednesday and Thursday, April 29th & 30th is when you should plant flower crops. Borage, broccoli, cauliflower and artichokes.

May 1st & 2nd are leafy plant days: Basil,Brussel sprouts, celery, dill , rhubarb, spinach, cabbage, cucumbers, and lettuces.

May 2nd-5th are fruit planting days. Any fruit which makes it's own seed ,like strawberries, peaches, plums, eggplants, zucchinis, peppers, chili's, fava beans, broad beans, peas, cor ,tomatoes, and any sort of squash.

Please note that I did not list every type of plant but I'm just giving a general idea of what one can grow.

One of the happiest times of year for us as a family is to get out there in the garden. So let gardening season begin. Yiippeeeee!

  1. Hmm, I’ve never heard of planting by the moon… does it apply to planting the seeds at a certain time during the lunar cycle?

  2. Greetings. Planting by the moon is a very ancient tradition in many cultures. Here are some links so you can see what method I’m using.

Here is a link to the book that Steiner wrote on the matter.
