One Small Change: One Seed at a Time

Announcements:

When I think of Suzy and the starting of one small change, it brings to mind an idea of the Kenyan people called "harambee", which means "the spirit of pulling together for the common good. The journey that my family has been on since the beginning of the year with one small change, has led us to believe that our acts are so important. By taking a moment and reflecting on our patterns and habits we have joined a grassroots movement via the blogosphere to preserve our planet for future generations. While at the same time making new friends who are on a similiar journey just like us.

This month's one small change is inspired by the first African woman Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Muta Maathai. Growing up in the foothills of Mount Kenya, Wangari had a deep love of the people and the land around her. Trees make her smile. Wangari planted trees to give her beauty, shade, and the over all refreshment of the spirit.

MaathaiTree

Being the only female with a Ph.d in Africa at the time, she was held in the highest esteem as a wise woman. People often sought after her for advice. Many women would come to her to solve their problems.

As each woman would come with their issues, a tree seed would be given as an answer to their inquiry. Always high praise was given to their outer and inner strength, their courage, and how this particular tree seedling could solve their problems.

In 1976 Wangari Maathai started a grass-roots movement of planting trees to establish peace in Kenya.  The trees prevent soil erosion, filter water and air, and provide firewood, food, and timber for shelters.  The women are credited with embracing this movement and reclaiming their rights as "Keepers of the Earth." The Green-Belt Movement has planted more than 30 million trees in Kenya and other African countries.

This months one small change will see us planting trees. Each person on planet earth needs 15 trees per year to be supplied with enough oxygen to live. There are 5 people in our family so we will need to plant 75 trees.

For a little family tree planting fun, please head on over to Jump Into A book, where we are experiencing Wangari Maathai's tree journey by jumping into the book Mama Miti by Donna Jo Napoli and Kadir Nelson.  This book touches the heart and spirit of this woman leaving us all empowered to make One Small Change.

  4. OK, this is just amazing. I am so moved my this post, and what an incredible One Small Change you have here. I am very exicted to see how your journey evolves. After reading this, I am strongly considering planting trees for our Earth Day activity.
Valerie, I also have to tell you that I was just blown out of the water at your article for the magazine. My husband read it last night, came up while I was cooking dinner and said “My favorite piece in your magazine was Oh The Places We Read”. I hope that you understand the significance of that, since I am married to the man, and I had two article in there myself :)”
We went out today and got a few small things, like clip on lamps, to make a special reading space for the boys, and we have decided that we will be putting them down every night at 7 pm, and allowing them the space to read some books, on their owm before they turn out the lights.
Thank you for your amazing words. We are really hoping that you will join us for the Summer edition

  6. Dear Valarie,
Thank you for sharing about Wangari Muta Maathai. What gorgeous wisdom, beauty and vision. It is inspiring to read her story and to hear of your plans to plant trees in her honor. My family works a stand at our farmers market, the idea behind it is to have the children involved see where our food comes from through planting, harvesting and selling – getting to know the community. One of the areas that is set up is an education spot for kids to learn more about farming and there are large yogurt containers that have maple saplings for anyone to take home. It is a beautiful thing to see the kids take joy in planting them.

  8. Thank you Emily for your very kind words. About all of those trees…..well…we are planting about 20 of them in the fruit orchard and the rest will be planted with in 20 miles of greenbelt. We have this lovely nature preserve where people can walk and the trees will be planted there. Take care and big hugs.

Your husband has given me a great compliment and I’m so glad that “the boys” at your house are having a fun time creating reading places. Send me a photo of their spaces. I would love to see them.

  13. Hi Nicole. I love this idea about children working the farmer’s market. We have a huge garden and this year our children are planning it but wouldn’t it be a great awareness project to have many children in the community going to the farmer’s market. What a great idea about the maple saplings. There is a man here who gives away oak trees, maybe we could get him at the farmer’s market too. Thanks for stopping by. It’s always good to see you. Take care.
