A voyeur called Spokeo…Very Important

Spokeo

Greetings friends. I think you know by now that I keep things very positive here on the blog but today I have to share this information with you because I think you have the right to protect yourselves. Recently there is a new site called spokeo . They advertise themselves by saying"Not your grandma's phone book." When I typed in my name and my husband's name it disclosed a direct map and photo of where we lived, our phone number, how many children we have, the round about figures of what we earn. That's all free information. If you buy a membership anyone searching for you will receive a full credit disclosure, what your hobbies are and all third party syncing such as facebook, twitter, etc, along with photos and videos you may have posted online. It is a one stop shop for all information about you. Yes, much of this information is online already but in a variety of spaces and many sites would need your exclusive permission to access this information. This site by-passes this. I typed in name after name of family and friends to find the same very personal information about them.

There is hope……here is how you can remove this information and by doing so probably remove it from a variety of data banks.  Yes I am online and in a variety of communities but I choose to partake in those and try and protect myself and my family as much as possible.  I thought I would share this information so you would know that this is out there and you can make the decision which is right for you.

I'll be back tomorrow, in my lovely little blogging world. Have a great evening. Be well.

Valarie

  1. I checked it. It is crazy that they can publish such private info without our knowledge. I thought there were laws about it!

  2. Spooky – both how long it takes to remove yourself from their database and that there’s no means given to follow their data trails back to where they sourced the information. An interesting reminder of how much of our lives today are public and/or stored by groups like this. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Me too. I just don’t know which law that would be.
